MINNEAPOLIS - Sept. 13, 2012 - Medtronic, Inc. (NYSE: MDT) today was named one of the world's leading sustainability companies by its inclusion in the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index (DJSI World) and the FTSE4Good Index Series. The DJSI list, released today, analyzes companies on a series of sustainability criteria, including economic performance, environmental stewardship and social responsibility.

"We are proud of our efforts to address chronic disease, to follow environmentally sound business practices, and to bring sustainable value to all of our stakeholders," said Omar Ishrak, Medtronic chairman and CEO.  "We are pleased to be recognized for these efforts by our inclusion on the DJSI World list."

One example of Medtronic's sustainability commitment is the ongoing effort to bring life-saving therapies to millions of patients in emerging markets, who don't currently have access to such technologies. In August of 2012, Medtronic announced the opening of a research and development center in Shanghai, China, the company's first outside the United States and Europe. The Shanghai Innovation Center will work closely with local universities, research institutes, and physicians in China to create innovative, cost-effective strategies to serve patients in that country. Medtronic intends to hire and train 1,000 skilled staff over the next five years, who will focus on developing new medical technologies within the Innovation Center.
