SAN ANTONIO, TX - December 8, 2014 - Medtronic, Inc. (NYSE: MDT) today announced that five San Antonio community organizations will receive a combined $250,000 in Health Access Grants in recognition of their continued commitment to promoting healthy lifestyles and improving access to healthcare, with an emphasis on diabetes. As Medtronic marks the five year anniversary of its San Antonio location, this announcement demonstrates the company's ongoing support of the local community. Medtronic Philanthropy awards Health Access Grants in 36 communities around the world where Medtronic has a major presence.

The 2014 Health Access Grant recipients for programs in San Antonio are:

• JDRF of South Texas will use its Medtronic Health Access Grant to educate the broader and under-served community about type 1 diabetes, and provide resources to improve their access to care. In addition, they will use the grant to expand support groups, outreach activities, and educational seminars for families impacted by type 1 diabetes. JDRF is non-profit organization dedicated to funding type 1 diabetes research.
• YMCA of Greater San Antonio will use its Medtronic Health Access Grant to extend their outreach health and wellness programs, specifically to those communities with a higher prevalence of diabetes, to promote and educate on physical activity and healthy eating. The Greater San Antonio YMCA biannually hosts Siclovia, San Antonio's largest health and wellness event, to communicate health and well-being in a family friendly environment with the community. The YMCA is a nonprofit organization with a mission to put Christian principles into practice through programs that build a healthy spirit, mind and body for all.
• American Diabetes Association (ADA) of San Antonio will use its Medtronic Health Access Grant to coordinate and implement the Hispanic outreach education program, Por Tu Familia, to educate the Hispanic community about preventing and managing diabetes, and provide them with resources for improved access to diabetes care. ADA is a United States-based association working to fight the consequences of diabetes and to help those affected by diabetes.
• San Antonio Sports will use its Medtronic Health Access Grant to expand i play! afterschool, an afterschool program with sports training, nutrition education, and character building, from 30 to 45 elementary schools in San Antonio. They will also implement Fit Family Challenge, a county-wide program with fitness classes, nutrition education, and health screenings in seven school districts for 12 weeks in summer 2015. San Antonio Sports is a non-profit organization committed to transforming their community through the power of sport.
• San Antonio Social and Health Research Center (SAHRC) will use its Medtronic Health Access Grant to incorporate parents into their Bienestar/NEEMA preschool health program, providing physical, health, and nutrition education to promote healthy lifestyles for families and children ages 3 and 4 within the Eastside Promise Neighborhood. The grant will also help provide parent screening and medical care of chronic diseases.  SAHRC is a non-profit center committed to the social and health well-being of populations at-risk.

November marks the five-year anniversary of the Medtronic Diabetes Group San Antonio site, which offers customer care services, as well as education and training for patients and healthcare professionals using Medtronic technologies and services for the management of diabetes.
