Over the past 11 years, it has hosted over 30,000 healthcare professionals and established itself as a hub for advancing medical skills in Korea.
  • With the additional establishment of the new ‘Robotic Surgery Research and Training Center,’ the MIC Osong Campus becomes the first and only facility in Korea capable of conducting research and education for all surgical platforms—open, laparoscopic, and robotic—under one roof.
  • Woo-yong Lee, Head of Korean Surgical Society, “This comprehensive research and training environment meets the growing demand for highly complex and personalized treatment in modern clinical settings and is expected to contribute significantly to fostering next-generation surgical experts “
  • Chang-hyun Oh, Director of Health Industry Promotion Division of Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, “look forward to seeing Medtronic break new frontiers in the development of advanced medical technology and grow as a key partner in the Korean and Asian healthcare industry, with the opening of the new center”

The opening ceremony was inaugurated in the presence of guests of honor including representatives from the Ministry of Health and Welfare and the Osong Medical Innovation Foundation, academic leaders in Korea such as Korean Association of Surgery, Korean Society of Endo-Laparoscopic Robotic Surgery, and Society of Korean Robotic Gynecology Surgery, as well as Rajit Kamal, VP & GM of Robotic Surgical Technologies and Rok Yoo, VP, Medtronic Korea Ltd.

Medtronic Korea Ltd., a subsidiary of Medtronic Plc., today announced the grand opening of the ‘Robotic Surgery Research and Training Center’ at its Medtronic Innovation Center (MIC) Osong Campus, located in the Osong Advanced Medical Complex in Chungcheongbuk-do, Korea. With this addition, the MIC Osong Campus becomes the first and only infrastructure in Korea capable of supporting research and education for all surgical platforms, including open surgery, laparoscopic surgery, and robotic-assisted surgery.

Since its opening in 2013, the MIC Osong Campus has been a pioneering facility for medical device research, development, and training. It also garnered significant attention as the first foreign direct investment initiative within the Osong Advanced Medical Complex. Today, it serves as a powerhouse for advancing medical skills in Korea, conducting approximately 250 training programs annually and hosting 3,400 healthcare professionals each year. Over 15 domestic medical societies, including the Korean Surgical Society and the Korean Society for Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, have partnered with MIC Osong to enhance understanding of medical residents in the latest technologies. Globally, Medtronic operates eight MIC campuses across six countries. MIC Osong Campus specializes in live surgery demonstrations and hands-on training.

The newly opened ‘Robotic Surgery Research and Training Center’ features the latest Medtronic robotic-assisted surgical systems and four labs, offering an optimal environment for robotic surgery training and research. It is expected to conduct research on the application of robotic surgery to various diseases, as well as comprehensive surgical research and education through linkage with existing laparoscopic education and training programs. In addition to the medical professionals currently performing robotic surgery, training programs for new medical staff, medical residents and fellows, and nurses will be developed to create a foundation for the safe and effective use of robotic surgery in clinical practice in Korea. It is also expected that the company will develop products based on feedback from Korean healthcare professionals and actively engage in clinical research to advance the field of robotic surgery. The opening further strengthens the campus’s role as a hub for surgical training in Asia, facilitating the sharing of Korea’s world-class expertise with healthcare professionals worldwide.

MIC Osong Campus, built on a 6,300-square-meter site with a construction area of approximately 2,900 square meters across two floors, has continually enhanced its research and education facilities. In 2021, it opened the ▲Cath Lab, equipped with angiography devices and simulators, as part of its ongoing investment in advanced training environments. Other features include the ▲Surgical Lab, which replicates hospital operating rooms with 11 surgical tables, laparoscopic and endoscopic devices, LED lights, and HD monitors; the ▲Surgical Synergy Lab, equipped with state-of-the-art radiographic imaging systems such as C-arm, Navigation system, and O-arm™ for orthopedic and heart surgery training; the ▲ICU Lab, designed for emergency and respiratory care training; and an ▲auditorium, which features virtual communication capabilities and accommodates more than 100 participants.
